Alfred Truesdell
(A.T.) Collection

This collection is inspired by the architecture of my Great Grandfather, Alfred Truesdell Gilman. His work is heavy with strong lines, large windows, and unique shapes while nature is prominent within his work in wood beams, stone fireplaces and even a few indoor trees. For this collection I wanted to highlight the intersection of nature and architecture, whether cohesive or contrasting, using his work and locations as inspiration.

Tranquility A.T. Sullivan Canyon

Summer A.T. Malibu Sands

Golden Hour A.T,
Garden of the Gods

These paintings are the most personal and special collection I’ve worked on to date. I had been playing with lines, angles and nature in my sketches for awhile when I became re-acquainted with some pictures of my great grandfather’s architectural work. Alfred Truesdell Gilman also known as Alfred T., or Hap came up in the mid-century modern era of architecture and his integration of natural fibers and large windows to bridge the indoors and nature immediately inspired me.

I immediately went down a rabbit hole researching any building I could find that he worked on. While there are many projects that I have not tracked down, the ones I found are full of intriguing lines and angles. Along with using his architecture as inspiration I have also taken inspiration from the nature prominent in the areas of his projects including coastal California, Texas and Colorado.

His home in Sullivan Canyon, California is the inspiration for multiple paintings in this collection which has allowed me to feel closer to him through family stories as I research his work. After construction, members of three generations were able to call this house a home and although it is no longer in the family, the love for the home is undeniable.

I’m looking forward to exploring this collection further and learning more about architecture and family.
